Kara Thornton is an associate in Lavan Legal’s Media, Defamation and Privacy Team within the Commercial Advice and Litigation Group.
At Lavan Legal, Kara acts on a variety of commercial matters with a particular focus on media and defamation law. She has considerable experience acting for clients who have been the target of defamatory content, in particular by online campaigns, and in the context of defamation proceedings in the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Kara has particular experience acting in matters in which social media websites, like Facebook, and online forums operated by Google, have been involved as the intermediary by which highly offensive, defamatory content has been uploaded by perpetrators and for clients who want such material taken down from such online platforms.
Kara has a Bachelor of Laws/ Bachelor of Communications and Media Studies (Journalism) from the University of Wollongong, New South Wales. In 2007, Kara undertook an internship inhouse at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) which involved working across all areas of media law. Specifically, Kara worked with the ABC’s in-house legal team to prepare defamation proceedings commenced against the ABC for trial, was involved reviewing the content of the ABC’s productions and providing pre-publication legal advice, monitored and dealt with copyright infringements, conducted trade mark searches, and reviewed licensing agreements.
Kara commenced with Lavan Legal in 2010. Prior to joining the firm, Kara worked in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution team at DLA Phillips Fox in Sydney. Kara acted on a wide range of matters there, including commercial and contractual disputes, public and product liability claims, personal injury matters and general insurance litigation. Kara also has considerable experience in dust diseases litigation, having acted on behalf of manufacturers, suppliers and employers in numerous proceedings commenced against them in the Dust Diseases Tribunal of New South Wales and Supreme Court of New South Wales.
