Lavan Legal is Western Australia’s largest independent law firm and second largest legal firm, with 20 partners and over 200 staff.
Our core principles are to:
We are one of Western Australia’s oldest legal practices, operating in Western Australia since the 1890s when Michael Gibson Lavan, KC first set up practice in Perth. Lavan & Walsh was formed in 1920 and we practised under that name until 1983 when we became Lavan Solomon. In 1985, together with firms in Sydney and Melbourne, we commenced trading as a franchise under the name Phillips Fox. In late 2005 we terminated that franchise and on 3 April 2006 established Lavan Legal through a merger of the majority of the Perth partners of Phillips Fox with the litigation and corporate firm Bennett & Co.
As an independent firm with a strong regional focus, we offer a specialised understanding of the law, business and community in Western Australia.
We are a full service firm. Our lawyers provide legal advice to the banking, finance, energy, resources, corporate, property, planning, insurance, environment, government, construction, tourism and sports sectors. Additionally, our services include insolvency, reconstruction, tax, media, defamation and employment law. Our litigation team is the largest in private practice in Western Australia.
We work with many of Australia’s largest organisations including Woodside Energy Ltd, Westpac Banking Corporation, St George Bank Limited, National Australia Bank Limited, North West Shelf Joint Venture, Boral Limited, Inpex Alpha Ltd, Mineralogy Pty Ltd, Newmont Mining Corporation, Barrick Gold Limited, Perdaman Chemicals and Fertilisers Pty Ltd, Water Corporation and LandCorp. Our commitment to social responsibility is best demonstrated by our community partnerships. We sponsor Surf Lifesaving WA, RugbyWA, the Emirates Western Force, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, The Fogarty Foundation, the Rottnest Channel Swim, The Centre for Cerebral Palsy and the WA Business News’ Rising Star Awards. Our partners are actively involved in a number of associations that promote education and the arts in Western Australia.
We have established pro bono and ethics committees. Our reason for establishing these committees is to continue to be a ‘good corporate citizen’ and to ensure that the highest levels of integrity are maintained within the firm.
